Nutrition and care for HIV positive infants and children
-----------------------------------------------
Let's refocus on nutrition and care for HIV positive infants and children
We would like to hear and learn from your experiences
This is what has been discussed so far:
1. Exclusive breastfeeding for the first months of life is best for HIV positive children if the mother is in good health and nutritional status. However, additional nutritional care and support is required for the mother to compensate for the energy and nutrients expanded for breastfeeding.
-In this context, how long should infants be breastfed?
- When should the complementary feeding start, what should it include and why?
2. Exclusive breastfeeding may further compromise the nutritional status of the HIV positive mother since most of the mothers are often malnourished.
- What advice do you give to mothers or caregivers on how to feed their infant in this context?
3. We also learned that advice on giving small and frequent meals to HIV positive children seems to be very appreciated by mothers, and also positively impact the health status of the child, especially those children over one year of age. We would like to hear more about your successes in feeding HIV positive children and how do you measure the successes?
4. What are the challenges encountered in feeding and caring for HIV positive infants and children? How are you trying to address them?
Please share what you are doing for the nutrition and care of HIV positive infants/children, we would like to learn from you. We know that there are many HIV positive infants and children who are living, growing and developing well because of the nutrition and care that they receive.
