Just to clarify: I don't know why they chose soya as an ingredient in
Likuni Phala, I'm was just speculating! I would have prefered that they
chose a local bean that all Malawians already new instead of introducing a
new food. But to answer your question about soybeans:

Soybeans, dried 100 gm contains:

Kcal 405
Pro 34 gm
Fat 18 gm
CHO 29 gm
Ca 185 mg
Fe 6.1 mg

I believe the table I am looking at for this info came from the FAO website.

Just as comparison, chickpeas, dried 100 gm contatins:

Kcal 325
Pro 20 gm
Fat 3.7 gm
CHO 57 gm
Ca 250 mg
Fe 11 mg

(less pro & fat, more CHO and more Ca & Fe).

Every bean has its own qualities, a mixture of different foods from all the
food groups is our best bet at getting all the nutrients that our bodies
need! Likuni Phala or any other formula that people come up with needs to
be a part of a mixed diet.

Hope this helps,
Stacia
