RE: [pronut-hiv] Advice on developing STANDARD NutritionGuidelines for PLWHA (5)

A lot of people are doing good work in nutrition, and I have met Lynde
Francis, who is a dedicated person to the cause of nutrition and
HIV/AIDS.

I pick up some points of concern in the message though. PLEASE, PLEASE,
PLEASE ensure that all guidelines for people living with HIV/AIDS are
evidence-based. There is much confusion created by anecdotal messages
floating around.

Dear Daisy and all--
Your message is very important and I have a great resource for you!
My
dear friend Lynde Francis, who directs the Centre, has been
working
for 12 years on nutritional issues and has recently published
an
EXCELLENT book entitled "Positive Living: Food & Us" written by
her
with Jim Rose. She has also worked on nutritional guidelines for
a
number of countries, including Malawi and Zambia, as well as one
for
Zimbabwe. The work on the guidelines in Zimbabewe has been
underway
for about 4 years but has not yet been approved as she has had
a
dispute with one of the local experts who keeps insisting that
the
guidelines include the use of cooking oil, sugar and red meat.
These
can all have deleterious effects on digestion and should be avoided
or
minimized drastically where possible. Of course, nutritional
decisions
are VERY personal and we can't tell anyone what to do--merely
offer
the information in a way that can help to empower choices.
And of course, as others have noted, those of us in the United
States
can help by demanding that agricultural tariffs against Africa
be
eased. The horrible poverty that arises due to this block is
only
exacerbated by such brutal policies. This, combined with the
best
possible local management of resources and grain storage, etc.,
can
help to offset the frightening famines that afflict too many
regions
globally--very often avoidably. Those countries that have
sustained
both adequate stockpiles and excellent distribution systems have
often
managed to prevent the worst of famines from developing.
Please do get in touch with Lynde--she is travelling right now
but
should be back the 19th. The Centre is located at 24 van Praagh
Ave.,
Milton Park, Harare. The telephone number is 732-966.

Dear Nutritionists,
A lot has been written on Nutrition and HIV/AIDS. However, I wanted
some
advice on how I can come up with standard nutrition guidelines for
PLWHA,
which I intend to submit/recommend to my government as soon as
possible.
Apparently our Ministry of Health has not yet developed these as
yet.
Your help is greatly appreciated.
