Invitation for participation and submission of abstracts in the International Symposium on Infectious Diseases at Kigali, Rwanda, on August 23-27, 2005
Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the Organising Committee of the Symposium, I
would like to invite you to the International Symposium on
Infectious Diseases to be held in Kigali, Rwanda, on August
23-27, 2005.

BACKGROUND
On the occasion of the 10th edition of the National Medical
Conferences (Journees Medicales de Butare), the Ministry of
Health in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine and the
Rwandan Medical Association are organizing an International
Symposium on Infectious Diseases, to take place August 23-27,
2005 in Kigali, Rwanda.
For the past few years, the Ministry of Health has put much
emphasis on improving management improve management of all
diseases control programs, but to reduce the bad trend of
health indicators especially Infant mortality rates
(107/1000) and maternal mortality rates (1070/ 100,000 live
births) that are among the worst in the world, importance is
now given to improve treatment efficacy of the main causes of
morbidity in Rwanda.
Hence, the aims of the symposium are to produce and advance
national treatment protocols in the areas of Malaria,
HIV/AIDS, TB, Diarrheal diseases and Nosocomial Infection
Control. Particular emphasis will be put on treatment schemes
regarding children, pregnant women.
Participants will be national clinicians and nurse
practitioners working throughout the country and academics
from the Faculty of Medicine at the National University of
Rwanda. The Ministry of Health will also join efforts with
its international partners in a bid to exchange experiences
and enhance crucial partnership in addressing infectious
diseases.
Participants are invited to submit abstracts and summaries of
posters in either English or French on the areas to be
discussed by July 25, 2005 on the following email address:

Methodology
The Symposium will be organized over 5 days, gathering all
medical doctors and some nurse practitioners heading health
centers and health districts in Rwanda. We expect a turn up
of a minimum 300 participants. Selected invitations shall be
forwarded to specific presenters from US, Belgium, The
Netherlands, Uganda, Kenya, and South Africa among others .
There will be updates on new researches or case studies both
in Rwanda or elsewhere but applicable to topics of the
symposiums in the form of:
* Oral presentations
* Panel discussions
* Posters
* Group work to evaluate existing treatment protocols
Submission Guidelines
TOPICS
You are invited to submit research abstracts related to the
conference theme, Symposium on infectious diseases in
Rwanda, and particularly in relation to the following focus
areas as outlined in the Call for Abstracts:
* TB
* HIV/AIDS care and treatment
* Malaria
* Diarrheal diseases
* Control of Nosocomial infections
PRESENTATION FORMAT
Selected abstracts will be assigned to either a poster or
oral presentation format. Please indicate which format you
prefer. While the presentation format of your abstract will
be determined by the Symposium organizers, author preferences
will be given consideration.
PROPOSALS FOR WORKSHOPS / PANEL PRESENTATIONS ON
COMMUNITY-BASED PARTICIPATORY RESEARCH
Teams or groups of presenters are invited to submit proposals
for 90-minute workshops or panel presentations on innovative
infectious diseases research projects, including
community-based participatory research. We encourage
interdisciplinary research teams that include community
partners to showcase their work. The presentation may address
the design and implementation of the project, the development
of unique partnerships, challenges encountered, lessons
learned, and action outcomes. Workshops should aim to enhance
participants skills to conduct community-based participatory
research in their own communities.
You must submit a proposal for a workshop or a panel
presentation as a Microsoft Word document by email to
symposium@moh.gov.rw. Proposals should be no longer than 1000
words and should include the following components: the title
of the workshop or panel presentation; the title of the
research project that will be the focus of the presentation;
a full list of presenters, including each presenters title
and affiliation; and an outline of the workshop or panel
presentation, including learning objectives for participants.
PUBLICATION
All abstracts, workshops, and panels that have been accepted
for presentation will be published in the official conference
program.
FORMAT OF SUBMISSIONS
Abstracts must be submitted using the internet at
symposium@moh.gov.rw. You may also reach us by calling Dr

HOW TO PREPARE YOUR ABSTRACT
* Abstracts must not exceed 400 words.
* If you choose to include a table or graph, this will
reduce your allotted space for text accordingly.
* Define abbreviations when they are first used.
* Do not use abbreviations in the title of your abstract
* List the Authors full names, without degrees or
titles, in proper order.
* List the Institutional Affiliation(s), City, Province
or State, and Country of the First Author.
* List the Email addresses of all authors.
* Structure your abstract according to these headings:
Introduction, Methods, Results, and Conclusion.
* We strongly encourage you to mention the implications
of your research for community organizations, policy-makers,
and / or stakeholders.
SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS AND DEADLINE
* All abstracts and proposals must be submitted by 6:00
p.m. (1800h) EDT (Eastern Daylight Savings Time) JULY 25 th,
2005.
* You may submit multiple abstracts.
* If you are submitting a document file, save the
document using the presenting authors Given and Family
names. If you are submitting more than one abstract, add a
submission number to the filename.
* Although you may submit abstracts that have been
previously presented elsewhere, copyright law mandates that
your submission to this symposium have different wording than
your previous work.
NOTIFICATION OF RECEIPT OF ABSTRACT
All submitting authors will receive email notification of the
successful receipt of the electronic submission of their
abstract online. Written confirmation of receipt will be sent
to anyone who, with special permission, has submitted their
abstract(s) by surface mail.
REVISIONS TO SUBMITTED ABSTRACTS
You may revise your abstract up until 6:00 p.m. (1800h) EDT
on July 29, 2005. Mail-in submissions may not be changed once
submitted.
WITHDRAWAL OF SUBMITTED ABSTRACTS
You may withdraw your abstract up to 6:00 p.m. (1800h) EDT on
July 29, 2005.
NOTIFICATION OF ACCEPTANCE
We will send notification regarding abstract disposition and
presentation format by email to all submitting authors. It is
the submitting authors responsibility to notify all
co-authors. Authors who have received permission to submit by
surface mail will receive notification by surface mail.
