Invitation for Partner Organisations:
Positive Living HIV/AIDS Trainings
Empowerment Concepts (members: David Patient, one of the
longest-surviving people living with HIV, and Neil Orr, Research
Psychologist and author of Positive Health) is a Southern African based
training and development company. They are inviting partner
organizations to help them deliver their highly successful training,
Positive Living, to other countries in Africa.
The training is directed mainly at maintaining optimum health in the
period from initial HIV infection to just before AIDS, and thereafter,
support methods for ARV's:
* Basic nutritional guidelines for food & nutritional security.
Includes training in setting up low-water and low-labour Home Gardens,
and education on the importance of a 'balanced' diet.
* Focused nutritional advice for immune enhancement: I.e., what
easy-to-obtain foods to eat to keep the immune system at an optimal
level.
* Maintaining gastrointestinal health: Dealing with diarrhoea and
Wasting Syndrome.
* Easy-to-use at-home methods (clean water, exercise, home remedies
for common non-life-threatening conditions).
* Psychological coping methods to reduce stress and increase health
motivation.
* Optimising ARV treatment benefits through nutrition, compliance,
and knowledge of interaction effects with various foods and plants.
The details of the above methods are described in the book Positive
Health (4th Edition, 2004).
The methods are promoted as a complementary approach, in support of
proper medical treatment, including ARV's. Actuarial analysis of some of
the methods indicate a life-extension effect of approximately 4.4 years,
prior to commencement of ARV's. I.e., extension of the pre-AIDS period.
Research supporting the methods may be obtained from the authors.
The training is tool-focused and occurs over five days. Positive Living
is designed to give people tools that they can use to empower themselves
into taking action to support health and longevity, regardless as to HIV
status. To-date, over 2000 people have been trained in these medically
researched and proven methods. Our current footprint includes
Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, India, Eritrea, Lesotho, Swaziland, South
Africa, and Zimbabwe. We have also trained people from Cameroon,
Madagascar, Nigeria, and Ghana. Clients include UNICEF, UNDP, CARE,
World Vision, CC Africa, Tsogo Gaming, plus numerous open-to-all
trainings, and corporate Wellness programs. The program has also been
delivered country-wide in Mozambique (Programa Vida Positiva), for the
National AIDS Council
Empowerment Concepts (EC) is looking to take this process into other
countries where there is an interest and a need for Positive Living
methods and information. It is more cost effective for the EC trainers
to travel to other countries than for delegates to come to our training
centre in South Africa. Delegates from some countries in Africa - e.g.,
from West Africa - struggle to get visas to enter South Africa. The
program is suitable for large groups of up to 100 people and is easily
translatable, so language need not be a barrier to people accessing this
vital information.
If your organization is interested in possibly hosting the Positive
Living training in your home country, please contact David Patient at
david@empow.co.za to discuss course content, logistics, costs, and other
issues.
