Re: [pronut-hiv] How is abrupt weaning done? (4)

Comparatively, many women opt for breast feeding. And with a recent survey which we conducted, it was confirmed that many of them really adhere to their options. However, following the encouraging responses from some of these mothers, we think it is working. We donot recommend that HIV infected women should exceed six months still breast feeding. We recommend exclusive breast feeding for a minimum period but not exceeding six months.

How well does this recommendation work out? Do most women use this method,
and are they successful with it?

Is it ok for the mother to continue breastfeeding after 6 months, but to use
mixed feeding? Are there data on infection rate in previously uninfected
infants, nonexclusively breastfed during months 6-12.

Thanks.

We do recommend that whenever the mom starts thinking about weaning, she
should begin expressing breast milk into a cup and giving the baby by cup or
spoon. After a week or two, what the baby should recieve from the cup should
be formula food. In this way the baby gets used to the cup first and then
the cup content which is formula.
Thanks for your concerns.

Following on from Rachel on abrupt weaning. A lot of people talk about this
but how is it actually done in practice?

Thanks for reporting this interesting survey. Could you please let us know
in the future, how many of the babies are HIV infected or become HIV
infected.

Also, what are feeding recommendations for breastfed infants at 6 months of
age. Are they abruptly weaned, and if so, onto what? or is mixed feeding ok
after 6 months?

Thank you
