Rwandan guideline on Nutrition and HIV/AIDS, development process
This process was presented in the Central Africa Nutrition Focal Point
Network Meeting held on 20-22 July 05 in Brazzaville.
After the recognition of the importance of nutrition in the management of
HIV/AIDS for longevity and improved quality of life for PLWHA, Rwanda decides to elaborate a guide on Nutrition and HIV/AIDS. The guide presents the actions that service providers need to take in order to provide quality care and support for PLWHA at various contacts such as voluntary counselling and test, antenatal care, postnatal care, community visit, home based care, and education.
Development process:
Consensus and advocacy for the guideline development ; Set up a working group for this development ; Reviewing available information on Nutrition, on HIV/AIDS and any related subject (including guidelines from other countries e.g Ugandan and South African Guide, FAO guide) - Development based on evidence and nationally appropriate actions- ; Consultative and integrated process: wide consultations in the drafting of the guidelines (inputs from key stakeholders); Field pre-testing of 1st (complete) draft with service providers (feedback incorporated into draft) ;Resulting (2nd) draft presented to the "senior management team" of the Ministry of Health (feed back being incorporated) ; get final document.
The key challenges were : Integration and expansion of nutrition through
treatment and care services for PLWHA (incorporating nutrition care and support services) ; Capacity creation, retaining and utilization of health professionals ( need for senior level nutritionist in government side to advocate for nutrition , incorporate nutrition in the pre- service curriculum for health professionals.
The way forward: production and launch of the guideline, train service
providers on the
guideline; implementation and scale-up; monitor implementation process.
Regards.
Josephine
