I checked with a colleague knowledgeable about this system of water purification and he confirms that the bottles do indeed need to be clear for this method to work. He also cautions that the instructions must be followed exactly.

Dear all,
Little wood and lots of sun, that's the case for many of us so this seem

Here most bottles are blue plastic, not see-through. Anyone know if this
prevents the ultra violet rays from doing their job?
