Yes Rachel,But not in all cases:
While mixed feeding presents a higher cumulative risk
of transmission (0.26) than EBF and EFF (0.194), the
longer the duration of breastfeeding the higher the
risk of transmission (Coutsadis, 2001). Further more,
not breastfeeding after six months may even be more
difficult for mothers given individual circumstances
related to AFASS.
Before 2005, the WHO recommendation was to wean before
6 months ?early? and ?rapidly?, Since 2005 early
weaning has been shown to increase diarrhea,
gastro-intestinal infections and mortality (Kourtis,
2007 and Onyango, 2007) even with HAART (Homsy, 2007).
In the Zambia EBF study, (Sinkala, 2007), a number of
children with increased mortality rates in HIV-free
survival was high for early weaning compared to
continued breastfeeding. In 2007, WHO recommends that
HIV infected children benefit more from continued BF
rather than complete cessation depending on AFASS
factors while HIV negative children may stop
breastfeeding as soon as the AFASS factors are
ascertained (WHO consensus, 2007).
Thus they recommend that HIV infected children
continue BF into the second here of life.
