The Great Lakes University of Kisumu (GLUK) is
launching the 2nd International Course on Nutritional
Care and Support for PLWHA, scheduled for the 4th
March to 28th March 2008 in Kisumu Kenya.
The course has been designed due to the contribution
of nutrition in the care and support of PLWHA being a
priority. The vicious cycle of malnutrition and
HIV/AIDS in Africa create additional challenges for
nutritionists and care providers. These new challenges
demand acceleration of both short-term and long-term
efforts to combat malnutrition and its effect on
morbidity and mortality associated with HIV/AIDS. New
capacities have to be developed and new resources
sought.
A critical mass of trained personnel is needed to
address this issue. Existing nutrition training is
often too general and does not provide sufficient
knowledge to assist caregivers in effectively managing
nutrition care and support of PLWHA.
However, various short courses on nutrition and
HIV/AIDS for in-service providers have been held in
the region. These trainings, however, are not
accessible to all service providers in countries with
high prevalence of HIV infection and high demands of
care and support.
This training workshop will enable managers, planners
and caregivers to develop and implement strategies for
integrating nutrition in care and support programs of
PLWHA at the district ,sub-district and community
levels.
Objectives
This training workshop will provide knowledge, skills
and attitude to care givers, sharing leading
information in the field, assisting in integrating
nutritional care and support of PLWHA and conducting
nutritional surveys for measuring change in all
contexts. These have been segregated into two phases.
Phase I: Knowledge and Skills in care for PLWHA
Specifically, participants will acquire knowledge and
skills in:
* Designing of interventions for nutrition care and
support of PLWHA
* Planning of nutrition action for PLWHA
* Addressing food security in the context of HIV/AIDS
* Managing, monitoring & evaluating programs that
integrate nutrition care and support of PLWHA
Phase I of the course content is divided into nine
systematic sessions including basics, introduction,
nutrition action, food security, nutrition management,
PMTCT and drug nutrient interaction in the context of
HIV/AIDS.
Phase II: Nutrition Surveillance in care for PLWHA
Participants will acquire knowledge and skills in:
* Designing of nutrition assessment strategies in care
and support of PLWHA
* Planning and implementation of nutrition surveys for
PLWHA at community level
* Identification and management of nature, quality and
safety of food in the context of HIV/AIDS
* Conduct and analyse nutritional survey applying
qualitative and quantitative techniques in care and
support of PLWHA
Phase II of the course content is divided into seven
systematic sessions including, food processing, food
preservation, food quality assurance, qualitative
survey methods, quantitative survey methods, data
analysis, development of quality reports.
